Certain wild caught seafood is a healthy sustainable choice, the label “wild caught” does not necessarily indicate where it is from, or how it was cuaght (the methods for catching seafood are integral to determing how it impacts marine environments). And sometimes the labels are misleading. For example, a 2005 study found that at six out of eight stores in NY the “wild caught” salmon actually were farm raised.
Some states, such as Alaska and Washington, have created more strict labeling laws that require farm-raised seafood to be distinguished from wild-caught. However, “wild-caught” is not synonomous with sustainable.
