Does Styrofoam leach chemicals? Is the effect worse when it contains a hot liquid like coffee or tea?

Yes. Styrofoam, also known as polystyrene, can leach harmful chemicals into food and drinks. The leaching process is increased when in contact with hot liquids or when microwaved. In addition to being harmful to our health, Styrofoam production and Styrofoam waste are also harmful to the environment. However, there is currently a growing trend towards “bio-polymer” alternatives to Styrofoam which are plant-based and biodegradable.

The EPA stopped taking tissue samples to check for styrene once every single American tested was found to have styrene dissolved in their fat tissue.
