Yes, the new technology (they are calling it Smart Grid) for power transmission can save a lot of energy by doing the following:”[carrying] as much electricity as six standard lines, at 1/3rd the cost, using 25% less land, and with 1/10th the line losses.” (Source: American Electric Power) Instead of loosing current because of the resistance in a long length power lines (to get from the power plant to our houses, schools, and businesses), a smart grid line will keep the current high without there being much loss of that energy. So in other words, will be using more of what we produce, instead of allowing it to go to waste.
