does shopping online save transportation energy?

There are multiple factors that determine whether it is more energy efficient to choose shopping online rather than in-store. The Center for Energy and Climate Solutions stated that shipping two 20 pound packages by overnight air (the most energy intensive mode) uses 40 percent less fuel than driving 20 miles round-trip to the mall and is much more efficient than ground shipping. Ordering online takes out “the middle man”, eliminating transportation through huge trucks to stores or malls. If you live in the suburbs, are surrounded by Mega-marts, have to drive more than 6 miles to shop, are scrupulous about bundling online orders, choose ground shipping instead of overnight air, and are more concerned about fossil fuel over packaging waste/recycling-shopping online is the right option for you.
