Does the scent in candles make them less healthy?

Apparently, yes, scented candles can sometimes lead to health risks. Some candles may contain paraffin wax, when burned, releases toxins into the air. These candles could have been made using questionable methods involving crude oil refinement and fossil-fuel generating hydrocarbons. There is a possibility (although very rare) that carcinogenic toxins could be released from these candles as well as other pollutants including acetone, soot, lead and benzene.

It depends on the source of the scent. If it is a manmade perfume, it typically contains harmful chemicals. But, if it comes from essential oils, they are safe to breathe in. However, almost every substance is unhealthy to inhale when it is being burned.
