does salt water break down trash quicker than fresh water?

it would probably depend on what was in the trash, but salt water is more corrosive. Scientists recently discovered that plastics in the ocean can break down within a year, creating a “plastic soup”. Scientists used to think that plastics only broke down over hundreds of years, but it looks like under some conditions they break down faster. Harmful chemicals like BPA and polystyrene byproducts were found in water samples and were especially concentrated near places littered with trash.
