Russia plans to double its nuclear output by 2020. It currently has 31 operating reactors. It is also the world leader in fast neutron reactor technology.
The total electricity generated through nuclear power plants in Russia during 2005 was 137 TWh, or rather 16% of total power generation. Russia also has an energy strategy that seeks to double nuclear power generation by 2020, providing 25% of all electricity needs by 2030, and increasing the number of reactors from 31 to 59.
