Does rock climbing hurt the environment at all?

Rock climbing can hurt the rock being used if gear called protection is drilled for routes. Pitons can also be hammered into cracks. Both practices leave gear behind. Thankfully the rock climbing community at large is environmentally friendly. Conglomerates of climbers have been known to purchase land for protection. Not the least of these being The Access Fund, which has preserved over 6,500 acres.
