The National Academy of Science, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine and National Research Council released a report in 2003 that spoke of environmental and social damage done by oil and gas development. Even after oil drilling ceases in an area roads, buildings and equipment often remain because they are expensive to remove and dismantle. Oil refineries release 100 air pollutants, harmful waste onto the land, and fallout ash into open waterways. All in all, it is a very dirty business.
