Two to four billion bounds of PVC plastic are dumped into landfills each year, despite the fact that PVC in landfills can cause serious problems. Toxic chemical additives can leach out of PVC in landfills, and some of these toxins may end up contaminating groundwater supplies. In addition, when landfills catch fire (something that happens not infrequently, the burning of PVC can release the harmful chemical dioxin into the environment. Add to that the fact that PVC cannot be easily recycled, and the problem with widespread use of this material becomes obvious. PVC has been called one of the most harmful types of commonly used plastic.
