It shouldn’t if it’s sealed properly. Hissing is a symptom of leakage, and may be the result of problems with the fixed liquid level gauge or the safety relief valve or something else.
And if your heating is propane-based and you notice your propane usage going up, it isn’t necessarily the sign of a leak. If you live in a cold-weather climate or there is abnormally cold weather where you live, you will use more propane to heat your home. However, if you suspect your propane tank is leaking.
Remember, if you smell propane or suspect your tank is leaking, get away from the tank and call your propane provider!
