Does the production of oil in nature cause carbon dioxide in the atmosphere?

Producing oil is actually a form of carbon sequestration as dead animals and plants get trapped under the surface of the earth for millions of years, locking all the carbon in them away from the atmosphere. It’s only when oil is extracted and burned that carbon dioxide is released back into the atmosphere.
