Does the production of leather have the same problems with the environment as the production of beef?

I’m not sure what problems you are referring to when you mention the “production of beef”, but tanneries (where leather is produce) significantly impact the environment negatively. The process that manufacturers use to create leather include the usage of many toxic chemicals often improperly disposed of or stored. Those working in tanneries are subjected to higher rates of disease and illness due to the toxicity of their work, and depending on what country’s tanneries you are looking at, labor exploitation is common due to the unpleasantness of the job.
