Does our atmosphere turn carbon dioxide into anything else?

One of the many cycles on Earth is the Carbon Cycle. Carbon dioxide in the air gets turned into sugar, wood, and other plant tissues by living plants. Animals eat this plant materials and use the carbon for themselves. They die and end up part of soil or sink to the bottom of the ocean where the carbon lays trapped (this is how oil and coal were formed). We have been using fossil fuels and so returning all that soil stored carbon to the atmosphere upsetting the delicate balance of the system.
