According to the U.S. geological survey the electronics industry is not the dominant source of mercury in the environment. Due to mercury’s widespread distribution from natural causes (volcanoes, mineral deposits and vapor from the ocean), industrial causes (processing of metals, incineration of coal, medical waste, and mining) are not as impacting. Mercury’s low reavtivity allows it to spread and stay in the environment for long periods of time.
