That will depend on how hard you’re making each system work. If you go a day without eating, your respiratory system will likely be using more energy; if you go a day without breaking a sweat and eating a lot, it will probably be the digestive system. I did find one source that gave the estimate that the energy used to digest food is generally about 10% of the energy taken in, for the general population. I’m having trouble finding numbers for the respiratory system, probably because it is such a wide variance.
