Out bodies are created to keep a harmonious balance at a pH of 7.4. If too much acidic foods are eaten, the body buffers this with alkaline (basic) stores in the body and vice versa. The contemporary western diet is loaded with acidic foods such as hard cheese, salted foods, meat, and grains, so alkaline foods are recommended to balance this out. Alkaline foods are fruits and vegetables.
Too much in either direction isn’t good. Nothing should be too high or too low on the pH scale, otherwise it could be dangerous to your body. Water is considered pretty neutral, which of course is fine for the human body. You could probably drink something only slightly more acidic or more basic with no problems.
