The units on the page cited in the other answer are thousand barrels – so it is 286,764,000 barrels in August 2009 alone. The US consumes about 9 million barrels of gasoline per day. The auto industry per se does not use all that much gasoline/oil. It is the drivers of US cars who do – 70% of US oil consumption is in the transportation sector, and the US uses 44% of all the gasoline in the world.
