According to the Energy Information Administration, finished motor gasoline consumes the most oil with an output of 286,764 thousand barrels in August 2009 alone. Similar values occur in previous months.
The units on the page cited in the other answer are thousand barrels – so it is 286,764,000 barrels in August 2009 alone. The US consumes about 9 million barrels of gasoline per day. The auto industry per se does not use all that much gasoline/oil. It is the drivers of US cars who do – 70% of US oil consumption is in the transportation sector, and the US uses 44% of all the gasoline in the world.
