Yes. Organized crime has been associated with many flagrant abuses of environmental laws. There is a huge international black market for electronic waste, which illegally exports e-waste to developing countries to recycle. Organized crime takes advantage of the low wages of workers in developing countries to reclaim tiny metal scraps and electronic parts from the e-waste. In the process, toxic chemicals can leach into soil and rivers, contaminating the environment of these countries. Recently, the Italian mafia has also been implicated for sinking a ship full of barrels of nuclear waste in an attempt to avoid the heavy costs associated with the proper storage and disposal of radioactive materials.
