Used motor oil can cause a lot of pollution especially in water, although it also contributes to soil pollution. The problem with oil is that it contains many toxic chemicals that break down very slowly. So if used oil gets into a water supply or into the soil it can harm many of the organisms and species living there.
Therefore, it is a really good idea to reuse motor oil as a lubricant for other equipment. You can also take your used motor oil to a recycling facility where it can be refined into fuel oils used in the petroleum industry. One gallon of used motor oil provides the same amount of lubricant as 42 gallons of crude oil.
