The members of Obama’s cabinet charged with safeguarding the environment are not able to pass new laws themselves – but they have a lot of power to protect the environment that has already been given to them by existing laws. Just this month, the Environmental Protection Agency officially released a finding that the greenhouse gases responsible for global warming are a threat to human health. This means the EPA has the authority to curb global warming through the Clean Air Act, and can begin regulating emissions even if Congress does not pass a new climate law. It is now up to Obama’s to take the initiative and actually implement this authority. Obama can speed up progress himself by instructing his EPA to come up with a comprehensive strategy to dramatically limit greenhouse emissions through the Clean Air Act.
