Does noise pollution hurt animals?

Yes. Loud noises can disrupt communication between different animals by drowning out communications like mating calls. Sudden loud noises can induce a stress response in an animal. While, being stressed is a normal response to a sudden loud noise if those noises are happening all the time, such as living near an airport, the animals can end up living in a state of chronic stress. Chronic stress can lower reproduction rates and alter behavior. Animals that are stressed will spend more time watching and guarding and less time eating and grooming. Sometimes the animals can habituate and learn to live with the noise much like a person living next door to a busy street. Some noises can’t be avoided but we should make an effort to avoid very sensitive areas like breeding grounds to avoid the most negative of effects.
