Does the noise caused by ships make it harder for whales to communicate with each other?

Vessel noise can certainly interfere with the calls whales use to talk. Recent studies have shown that when killer whales hunt for salmon, if a nearby ship is making noise they must raise their “voices” to communicate and coordinate their attacks. The extra energy whales must use to talk over man-made sounds tires them and can impair their ability to survive.
