Yes. Devising desalination procedures that could deliver freshwater to US Navy sailors out at sea or Marines at shore became an Office of Naval Research priority in 2004 under the Expeditionary Unit Water Purification Program, or EUWP. The first generation EUWP technology demonstrator was designed as a deployable high water production unit more easily transported by the military and used for a variety of missions. Currently, desalination systems used by the Navy only result in a freshwater output 20 percent of the saltwater input, but new forthcoming designs will likely double that.
