Does moss usually grow on a certain side of a tree?

Yes, and it depends on where you are.  In most of the Northern hemisphere (save extreme north), moss grows much thicker on the north side of trees.  This happens because the north sides get less sunlight than the south, something that moss favors.  In most of the Southern hemisphere, it is the opposite.
