Does modern society do more for the environment than past civilizations?

We do more because unlike past civilizations instead of changing the environment into a new sustainable form, we have harmed it to where it is starting to fail. A perfect example is the Amazon. The ecology has been changed by slash and burn farming methods that have been in use for centuries. This has allowed for an equal distribution of plants that would otherwise congregate is isolated areas. The burning has allowed for new growth. Today we have to “do more” for the environment because we did not extract our materials from the earth in a way that allowed it to regenerate. So we do more than the past civilizations yes, but only because in the past it was built in. They didn’t have to do anything.
