Since 1978, federal regulations in the U.S. have banned the use of lead-based paint in residential structures. In homes built prior to 1978, there still may be lead paint, but the law requires that sellers notify any potential buyers of the lead content in the home.
Paint is now regulated in the United States to ensure that there is no lead in it.
While lead-based paint is regulated, it still sneaks its way into consumer products, especially those imported from other countries. The Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission tries to identify these items and recall them before consumers are able to contract lead poisoning. In fact, the Commission released a recall announcement regarding lead paint just a few days ago!
