There are places in the country, where illegal marijuana is being grown on a large scale on public land. This has been an issue in the Mendocino National Forest. Each of some 5000 plants in a crop need several gallons of water per day and this has caused a drain on the ecosystem. It has been reported that illegal immigrant work and live in these fields. After the crop has been harvested, equipment and shelters are often abandoned in the woods.
