Does making biodiesel take a lot of fossil fuels?

Depends on what you mean by “a lot”. The source materials for biodiesel are not fossil fuels, but today, fossil fuels are used to grow, harvest, and transport the raw materials of biodiesel, and the processing takes energy that may come from fossil fuels, and the end products are distributed using fossil fuels. Fossil fuels come into the cradle-to-grave story of biodiesel in other places as well.
