Yes, catch waste is an enormous issue in the fishing industry. The World Wildlife Fund conducted a recent study revealing that 40% of the total weight of fish caught is reduced to catch waste. This percentage is enormous as there is not a succinct and consistent definition of catch waste in the industry. Therefore, many fish go unaccounted for and are simply thrown back into the water dead because they were not the desired product. The WWF study found that 38 million tonnes are wasted. Anything considered by catch or catch waste is unmonitored, which means nearly half of each catch is not managed sustainably or according to fishing guidelines for any fish other than that which was desired.
