Yes. Many people are surprised to learn that there is a such thing as a Los Angeles River, until they learn that it is entirely encased in a concrete channel built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the 1930s as a flood control measure. (Remember the scene in Terminator 2 with the truck/motorcycle chase through the canal? That’s the Los Angeles River). In 2007, the City of Los Angeles officially adopted the Los Angeles River Revitalization Master Plan. This plan intends to restore the river to its natural state, create a wildlife corridor around the river and protect species as well as increasing economic opportunities for development along the newly-revitalized river. Various environmental groups are now working with the City of Los Angeles to implement various portions of the plan.
