The Kyoto Protocol is still in effect and will be until 2012 unless it is renewed. However, support for its renewal is dwindling, primarily because the major developed countries that have signed it think that those that have not—The US and China—have an unfair economic advantage. Japan, Canada, and Russia have each said recently that they will not sign a renewal unless big polluters US and China do the same. The Obama administration refuse to commit because the agreement does not force developing economies to abide to the same regulations as developed countries.
