Japan, like many other nations, is trying to combat pollution through laws and regulation. In 1993, the government legislated the Basic Environment Law which included restrictions of industrial emissions, products, waste, improvement of energy conservation, etc. Current issues that the government is dealing with includes waste management, global warming, nuclear policy, fishery and whaling, etc.
In addition, Japan has set a goal of 25% emissions reduction from 1990 levels by the year 2020 provided that other major world economies participate with similarly ambitious targets.
