Does it take energy to transport energy along power lines?

When transporting energy along power lines, some of the energy is lost.  This is because that energy is being turned into heat.  There is also the skin effect.  This is the reason why voltage is so high in long distance power lines.  The higher the voltage, the lower the resistance making it more efficiently transmitted to the places where it is going to be used.
