Plastic bottles currently require more water for production than glass bottles. For plastic bottles, it currently takes three liters of water to produce a one liter water bottle (pacinst). Glass bottles do not contain or require any water, which is currently made from sand (suite101). Therefore, we suggest reusing glass bottles rather than buying new plastic bottles, which are clearly environmentally inefficient.
While plastic bottles do require more water, but, ironically, glass made with water is more environmentally friendly than not: http://www.wired.com/underwire/2007/08/glass-made-with/
Glass bottles also break rather easily compared to their metal and plastic counterparts. As such, it’d likely be best to compromise and get metal.
There are also stainless-steel bottles that can be reused, so you avoid using the plastic bottles.
There are different companies to buy these bottles form. I have bought one bottle from a company called WeDrink. They also give a part of your purchase to charity for water relief purposes. Its great.
