Does it take a lot of oil to produce 1 gallon of gasoline?

Depends what you mean by “a lot”. The energy return on energy invested for oil is around 20 to 30 to one — one unit of oil invested gives 20 to 30 times the energy output. For ethanol, it is much closer to 1:1.
