Does it take a lot of energy to get coal out of the ground before it even gets to the plant?

Yes, mining for coal is an energy intensive process. They use heavy machinery these days, bulldozers and underground drilling equipment, which burn diesel fuel and other fossil fuels. It also require tons of water to filter the coal out from the other (non-coal) stuff they dig up. Then the coal has to be delivered to the power plant which requires even more energy for transportation.
