Does it take a long time for mattresses to break down in landfills?

Usually.  However, there are latex mattresses on the market that are biodegradable.  Flobeds produces high quality mattresses that are better for the environment.  See below for more information.

Because material is tightly packed, it’s hard for anything in landfills to biodegrade. Typically, there are few microorganisms and little soil and oxygen to biodegrade materials. Thus, waste just kind of sits in landfills. If a mattress is just sitting in a conventional landfill, I imagine it would take thousand and thousands of years to break down.
