Shooting blood from its eye is usually the last ditch effort for the horny toad. It doesn’t seem very comfortable at all, which is probably why the horny toad only does it in the most extreme situations.

To shoot blood at a predator, the horny toad will increase pressure in its head. This causes blood vessels behind the eye to rupture and blood to squirt out of the tear ducts.
