No. Iodine is an essential chemical for many creatures, humans included, and not consuming enough of it can lead to serious health issues (including mental retardation, for example, and it’s also been linked to various types of cancer), but it is not known to directly protect against other harmful substances. It does appear that iodine plays some role in our own biological immune systems.
