Garbage disposals in general (of which InSinkErator reportedly has an 80% market share) do not use much energy. Although disposals draw 500-1500 watts of power per use, equivalent to a steam iron, they are used for very short periods of time. The total picture of environmental impacts from garbage disposals, however, depends more upon the power they draw than what debris they place into municipal sewer systems, and how much food waste they keep out of landfills. Those issues are perennial subjects of debates, particularly in communities that are either reconsidering bans on garbage disposal installations–as New York City did when they repealed theirs in the 1990s–or offering homeowners and tenants financial incentives for installing them.
