Does the oil industry do anything to control supply and price?

The oil companies used to have a lot of control of supply and prices back in the 1950s and 60s, but today they have little control. Oil companies must purchase their oil at market prices these days, and since there is not excess supply, the price of oil is mainly determined by demand (automobile drivers).
