Yes, coal is one of the supporting infrastructure is one of the most harmful energy source we have. Coal current produces around 1/5 to 1/4 of our energy needs. One of the biggest disadvantages of coal is that when we burn them it creates sulphur dioxide, an acidic gas, which is an ingredient for acid rain. These can be filtered with limestone but that also produces another by-product. Shipping coal is very problematic as well as it can not be pumped in pipes. And to produce enough electricity truckloads of coal is needed virtually non stop.
Other fossil fuels, like oil and natural gas have smaller impact; both can be pipe shipped, and produce less harmful by-products and chemicals, this is especially true for natural gas.
