Methane is produced by enteric bacteria which can be found in the instestine. This bacteria slows intestinal transit and aids in the digestion performed by small intestinal contractions.
Indeed it does! Flatulence releases a number of gases, mostly non-odorous. The odor comes from other trace elements. The main gases released are methane, oxygen, nitrogen (the primary gas released), carbon dioxide, and hydrogen.
