Does hops take a lot of water to grow?

Young hops plants need frequent watering in small amounts to avoid drowning the shallow root systems. Established plants use a lot of water (at the referenced link one home grower reports giving his plants 1.5 gallons of water twice a day!), especially in the spring, but the amount used can be gradually decreased over the course of the growing season.
