There are no positive alterations to the environment through mining, although the materials that are mined could potentially help technological advances that could help the environment.  All in all, though, mining such as coal mining is not positive for the earth because it damages the landscape and ecosystems while enabling the burning of fossil fuels, which can upset the natural equilibrium of the atmosphere.
