The state of Hawaii has one coal-fired power plant. It is located on the island of Oahu. Coal is the second most used fuel in Hawaii. The plant is named AES coal burning power plant. It is in Campbell Industrial Park and was built over a year from 1988 to 1989.
The plant produces over 20% of Oahu’s electricity. There have been several discussions of building another coal plant somewhere on Hawaii but there have been many people to veto the idea.
In 2008 a bill was passed called the Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative. There have also been amendments made on regards to building any new power plant.
