Actually, no; it’s rather the opposite. Catalytic converters decrease the speed that exhaust gases and fumes can leave a car’s exhaust pipe. A slower release or buildup of gases means increased engine heat and strain, leading to a lower overall fuel economy. While this may be one negative aspect of a catalytic converter, it’s ability to treat pollutants leaving the car and entering the atmosphere has been quite beneficial to public and environmental health.
