Hiking does not harm the environment unless the hiker makes it do so. One of the easiest ways to not harm the environment while hiking is to stay on the trail, hiking off trail can cause damage to the natural environment. Hikers should also fallow three easy principles to make sure that they do not leave a negative impact on their surroundings. Hikers should 1. Leave with everything they brought with them, 2. Leave no sign of their visit and 3. Leave the landscape as they found it. By fallowing those simple principles a hiker can enjoy the environment without hurting it.
I once read a sign that was posted along a path that read: Take only pictures, Leave only footprints. It is a simple and honest message.
