Currently renewable energy sources only produce about 14% of overall power needs of the world. While oil produces 35%, coal 23% and natural gas 21%. The remaining 7% is nuclear generated. Unfortunately the UN is projecting that the demand for energy will increase by 60% by the year 2030 without real breakthrough in renewable technologies their market share will most likely remain about the same. This means that currently renewable energy is not nearly producing enough energy.
There are more aspects to the problem however. If we consider area used to generate power any current fossil fuel burning plant is smaller than renewable energy plants when their electric output is the same. Meaning that the “power density” of fossil fuels is still the largest.
